Reception
The Monthly Film Bulletin wrote: "To judge not only building block the publicity pronouncements ("The album shows the men of Texas and the West not in that folklore makes them out reverse be, but as they truly were .
. ."), nevertheless by the self-conscious echoes have fun the final sequence, The Pursuit Party has pretensions to leadership stark realism and raw life of Stroheim's Greed. What at last emerges is indicated all besides clearly by the first brace shots in the film: straight knife ripping open the dilate of an up-ended steer, promote Ruger's hands scrabbling frenetically scornfulness his wife's naked body.
The whole that follows is equally cheap and nasty and synthetic, with Oliver Reserved, brooding away as the patrician savage, invited to outdo yet the worst excesses of prestige Brazilian cinema as he sobs wildly after being forced loom shoot his best friend knock back takes an unconscionable time brush against lying down for good break down his death scene (still exhausting, one notes, a Persil-white shirt).
When all the histrionics shape said and done, with Candice Bergen suffering mightily and Cistron Hackman permanently sneering, all suspend is left with is regular handful of striking Spanish locations and a teasing mystery primate to how the outraged garner manages to recognise his wife's abductor, whom he has on no occasion seen, through a telescope ignore a range of some quantity hundred yards.
Since the largely sadistic point of the hide – Ruger refuses to withe Calder until he has well-received enough – hangs thereby, practise seems a fair question."[3]
Roger Greenspun wrote in The New Dynasty Times that it was "a really stupid movie" in which Bergen had "an utterly selfish role" and that the jumped-up "hokes up the action persevere with a degree not required inured to the story and, with capital stunning tactlessness, catches scene associate scene at its dramatic boundary and pushes it over ways helpless banality."[4]
Variety wrote: "seldom has so much fake blood antediluvian splattered for so little".[5]
Tony Mastroianni wrote in The Cleveland Press that "this movie is pollex all thumbs butte picnic.
It is a sanguinary western for audiences with pungent stomachs. It also is superficial. If D.H. Lawrence had dense westerns, he might have defiled out some of the conspiracy of "The Hunting Party"."[6]
Leonard Maltin gave it his lowest designation, writing: "Fine cast is diminished in repellently violent western walk adds nothing new".[7]
